Someday,
you too are going to grow old. It is the meanest thing life is going
to give you while you are alive. You keep hoping you get to see your
grandchildren grow old, but along with that wish is that when that
time comes, you are going to grow older as well. You imagine the
things you will be able to do with your life, retire in peace, enjoy
the little pleasures you might have missed along the way, but the
fact is you are going to be too old for most of them anyway. Truly,
youth is wasted on the young.
But
in the meantime, you have parents or grandparents that are already
old. Take care of them. Give them the little pleasures that they want
– time will come that you will be in the same position as where
they are now. If you are going out with them, keep an adult diaper or
two in your bag – you never know when they will need it. Or, every
time you visit, buy them a whole bag of adult diapers – the
effort you save them in going out to restock their supplies is more
effort than you just giving them what they need.
Learn
how to use blood pressure monitors. If not for them, the skill
is going to be for you when you grow old. At least, in that sense,
you will at least be prepared, and if you learn it now, you are
prepared for you and your parents or grandparents. One day, your time
will come, but for now, it is their moment, so to speak. Keep them as
comfortable as much as you can, so that when it is your moment, you
might be as lucky as they are with you at hand.
